It is a basic requirement of alternate history to have a defined point of divergence. As such, "what would Earth be like if gunpowder wasn't invented" is not alternate history. Alternate history would be what would happen if Pope Clement IV, instead of stimulating Roger Bacon to write his Opus Majus (= Greater Work in English), had him declared a heretic. It could have happened. No Opus Majus, no gunpowder in Europe in the 13th century. Without a defined point of divergence alternate history is just historical fantasy. | |

It'll be a more efficient way to nail down a good wiki. As proposed, it doesn't come close to meeting all the needs I think this tag is good for. | |

You can't have an "alternate" future condition (that doesn't make sense) and we already have three future tags (future, near-future, far-future). alternate-earth is, at best, a very narrowly focused version of alternate-reality. | |
